The clock is ticking down to race day!


 Welcome to our Air Race Classic Team #9 race blog. As we are prepping the plane and pilots for the race we will report in here on our progress.  The race begins in Fairhope, Alabama (KCQF) on Tuesday the 17th of June so just about two and a half weeks before the big push to Spokane, Washington (KSFF), some 2426 statue miles to the northwest.

As always our pilot duo carry over from the Purple Hearts Piper Archer team of years past. This year Teresa Camp based in Oklahoma  will roll out the 1978 Mooney J to chariot herself and tenacious Denise Robinson from Connecticut to the finish line. The plane underwent a motor re-fit in September of 2024 and has logged just under 95 hours on a 3600 hour airframe in preparation for a trouble-free run. 

The Sight Seein' Mooney (N201CN) features a 200 HP Lycoming IO-360 air-cooled engine, Powerflow tuned exhaust, Gami fuel injectors all tucked under a streamlined carbon fiber and glass LoPresti cowling. Inside the pilots enjoy a full Garmin glass, hard IFR avionics suite, Sirius XM and ADSB weather, a GFC500 autopilot, electric trim, flaps, and gear. 

Teresa Camp is a retired Aerospace engineer with 25 years and over 1600 hours of command time. Denise Robinson has 14 years in the cockpit and over 900 hours in command. This will be the team's 3rd Air Race Classic transcontinental race together. Teresa and Denise have flown together throughout the continental U.S. as well as in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana internationally.

The ladies are looking forward to an exciting and competitive field this year. They will be providing, satellite tracking data and blog entries throughout the race which we will share with regular updates and photos as they are received. We look forward to your comments and questions as the race progresses.

So what's with the Apple n' Worm Livery?

While traveling, probably the number one question regarding this particular Mooney aircraft is "Why the apple tail art?" - well ... there is a story behind that! N201CN was acquired in Massachusetts in 2017 with its current registration number (CN or Charlie November). As the contract was being finalized, the previous owner revealed that the registration fee was past due and had not been paid ergo, the plane may need to be RE-REGISTERED with a new number after purchase if the FAA reassigns the number. Beyond the sheer cost of re-painting new registration numbers on any plane, that number was CRITICAL to the purchase because we had already settled on the livery concept for the aircraft. Superhero Dynamic Duo reunited again!

 Ms. Denise arrived via commercial carrier on Monday so the duo is finally reunited after nearly a year and it's almost time to race. The ladies spent the day getting caught up and trying to avoid the Oklahoma heat in the afternoon. Plans were made for a first test flight together in the Sight Seein' Mooney in the cool of the following morning before the day's heat and potential moisture settled in.  This flight is just to take the plane up and test loggers, avoid Jokers* and surprises, as well as confirm various 'safety kits' that might be needed for the race. We talked earlier on this blog about keeping the luggage to a minimum and that STILL is very important, however depending on what type of flight any pilot takes, it is important to bring important emergency items along even if they add a few pounds to the cabin.
